The SH40 Cleat Adapter allows SPD cleats to be used on 5-hole shoes (those that accommodate both SPD amd SPD-SL). This adapter fastens to the SPD-SL holes to create a raised platform in which an SPD cleat can be embedded, meaning the shoe can be walked in without causing damage to floors, the shoe or the cleat.
